Over the last couple of years, I have spent time on the internet finding resources for professional crafters and gift producers. Below is my personal list of websites and resources that I would recommend to anyone entering the gift business:
- Barbara Brabec’s “Handmade for Profit” blog has a wealth of information on running your business. Barbara, who is a professional crafter turned home business consultant and writer, has over 45 years experience in the craft and business world. She has written several books on the subject (most which are in my personal library) that I would highly recommend to any one in the field.
I “met” Barbara over ten years ago when I was partnering to design a website for professional crafters in our local area (Idaho/Washington). At the time, I was publishing a small newsletters (Artisans and Crafters News) where I quoted many of her tips and articles. Since then, she has become a favorite resource and internet friend!
- Craft Marketing Tutor is a new site that I just recently found. This interesting site features a collection of articles from different experts in the field of marketing crafts. Founder, Anne Marie, sold her publicity firm to blog full time and help crafters and fine artists to increase their visibility and turn part time incomes into full time businesses.
- Recently, I became involved with another craft site, Handmade News, as a guest columnist for their Marketing Department. Handmade News offers professional crafters many different articles on many different subjects written by crafters themselves. A sister site of the popular crafter’s marketplace, Artfire, it is a great site to learn about marketing, business tips, craft trends and techniques.
- Last, but just as good as the rest, is Arts and crafts at About.com. Maire Loughran, the current ‘guide’ has extensive background in accounting and bookkeeping especially for professional crafters and gift producers. Check out her website for several tips on making and marketing your crafts.
