Tips for Creating a Professional Website

One of the areas where small business, like you and I, can compete on a fairly level playing field to the larger retail outlets, is on the web.

When making a professional website, a consumer won’t know if you are a large company with hundreds of employees or a small mom and pop operation.

But there are certain  tips to make your site look professional.  After muchTips for Creating a Professional Website research over the last 12 years (yes, we have been online with an ecommerce site since 2004), I have found that the following are necessities for any website:

Appropriate pages, beyond product pages, necessary for a professional website:

  • About Page (Learn more here and here)
  • Contact Page — Listing a phone number, email or email form and address (makes you more credible!)
  • Privacy Policy (See examples here and here)
  • Terms and Conditions Page (More information here and here)
  • FAQ Page (Will vary according to your website, but here are a couple examples from websites I built here and here.)

After working out your website, there are other regulations and policies you may want to research to protect yourself, you products and your website.

Other regulations and policies to consider:

Following are a few more things you may want to consider when setting up your website:

  • Check Anti-Spam laws when preparing your e-mail marketing
  • Make sure you have rights and permissions to use any content, graphics, pictures, e.t.c. that you didn’t personally create (There are numerous sites that offer free images.  Here is just one of them.)
  • Check the federal laws if you may have users on your website that are under age (Check out the info here.)

Don’t let this list overwhelm you as there are lots of help and examples all over the web.  Most of these just use a bit of common sense when implementing them on your website.
